ETSC's 10th Anniversary 1993-2003



PAST ACHIEVEMENTS 1993-2003:

  • Since 1993, ETSC has been the sole non-governmental transport safety organisation in Brussels with the main focus of providing impartial cross-EU expert advice on countermeasures to European policymakers. ETSC has played a key role in the developing EU safety policy over the last decade.

  • With the help of Europe’s leading experts, ETSC has identified systematically policy development needs to address common EU problems;

  • Published over 20 international research-based reviews outlining common transport safety problems and highlighting transport safety policy needs;

  • Produced newsletters and organised events to enhance awareness about transport policymaking needs and activity at EU level;

  • Assessed the huge cost of EU transport crashes and estimated comparative risk for EU travel and transport across the modes;

  • Encouraged road safety to the centre-stage of EU transport policymaking;

  • Campaigned successfully for substantial increases in the EU transport safety budget and the setting of an EU-wide road fatality reduction target;

  • Campaigned successfully for EU legislation on vehicle safety standards such as car occupant front and side impact protection, mandatory front underrun protection on lorries and for a legislative framework for pedestrian protection.

CURRENT CAMPAIGNS 2003-2013:

  • Campaign for safety to be given equal consideration to mobility and environmental needs in EU transport policy

  • Encourage EU policymakers to better match aspirations for improved safety with the delivery of effective research-based measures through an explicit EU transport safety strategy;

  • Encourage independent and systematic crash investigation for all transport modes across Europe, better databases, establishment of further transport safety targets and performance indicators;

  • Encourage the European Commission to introduce its 3rd Road Safety Action Programme bringing forward evidence-based EU measures contributing to at least 40% of its highly ambitious target to halve road deaths.
