The 2nd European Transport Safety Lecture - an invitation only event - was presented by Professor Emeritus Murray Mackay OBE DSc FREng on Safer Transport in Europe: Tools for decision-making".

This annual lecture series was launched successfully in January 1999 and opened with ' Transport Safety Visions Targets and Strategies : Beyond 2000 ' presented by Professor Kaare Rumar. Neil Kinnock, EU Transport Commissioner and Pam Cornelissen MEP, road safety rapporteur on the European Parliament responded.

This evening lecture in Brussels brings together senior policy makers, leaders of professions and industry from across the European Union to listen to contributions from internationally recognised leaders in the transport safety field. Introducing the series in January, ETSC Board Chairman, Professor Herman De Croo said : "We are bringing together in this event key individuals who, in view of their role and responsibilities, will make a major contribution to shaping future levels of transport safety. We aim to increase awareness of innovation, research-based solutions to important problems, and results-based transport safety management amongst policy-makers, professionals and the private sector. We want to stimulate a high level debate across the European Union to exchange knowledge and experience and to help forge new commitment to efforts to reduce the risks and costs of transport crashes".
